Este livro tem como objectivo o estudo da escultura, da pintura, da ourivesaria e de outras disciplinas das habitualmente chamadas Artes Decorativas e Iconográficas, sempre de origem europeia, sejam religiosas sejam laicas, existentes em Macau, e que chegaram ao território ou foram aqui executadas durante a administração partilhada com os portugueses, concretamente, entre 1557 e 1911. Essa origem europeia tanto representa importações directas da Europa, com Portugal em lugar destacado, como de outras regiões já asiáticas, como da Índia, Goa em particular, e de Manila, e também as que foram executadas no território, mas com uma matriz estética e uma iconografia de raiz europeia, seja por artistas chineses ou japoneses, seja por europeus que se estabeleceram na cidade. Consideramos este livro a continuação e complemento de outros trabalhos que tiveram como objecto a cidade de Macau, sobretudo do livro A Urbanização e a Arquitectura dos Portugueses em Macau, 1557-1911, editado, em Lisboa, já em 2005. Não será um inventário completo, mas o autor tentou elencar as obras mais significativas de cada disciplina artística, e das diversas origens, para ilustrar o panorama artístico macaense durante o período em estudo.

This book provides the first detailed investigation into a particular aspect of Macau’s rich musical tapestry during the past five centuries. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources, including travellers’ accounts, government documents, music manuscripts, newspapers reviews as well as the body of research on the history of Macau, the author discusses the unique relationship between religious faith and military defence within the context of Portugal and its Asian colonies and the consequent role of the Catholic Church and the military bands in shaping the musical life of Macau between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
