The late Ming and early Qing dynasties were turbulent in Chinese history, but a uniquely graceful and intensely self-conscious quality permeated the art – calligraphy, painting, seal carvings – of the Ming loyalist artists. The exhibit images of Against or Away: Artworks by Ming Loyalists in the Early Qing Dynasty from the Collection of Shanghai Museum are featured in this three-volume set of hardcover catalogues and a paperback. The exhibition’s eight sections – featuring works of ‘Four Monks’, ‘Xin’an School of Painting’ and ‘Eight Masters of Jinling’ – unveil the Ming loyalists’ art.
