Issue no. 72 highlights three works that were presented during the 2nd Annual Conference of Macao Studies 2022. The first two articles, respectively through an analysis of music pieces and cinematographic productions, discuss Macao’s cultural identity before and after the handover and respective changes in the social fabric. The third article is centred on a colonial feminist theory and the discourse of women in the 19th century, through an analysis of the first American female missionary visiting Macao.

A Gathering of Treasures - The 70th Anniversary of the Yu Un Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association of Macao

Across seven decades since its founding in 1953, the Yu Un Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association of Macao has held many salons and exhibitions. Their work has allowed Chinese calligraphy, painting and seal carving to be passed on and promoted today. The association has significantly united many veteran and emerging artists. It has been bringing together local calligraphy, painting and seal carving enthusiasts and promoting cultural exchange at home and abroad. It has achieved fruitful results and left a lasting and profound influence. The hardcover catalogue of A Gathering of Treasures - The 70th Anniversary of the Yu Un Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association of Macao contains images of all 200 pieces exhibited in the exhibition, including paintings, calligraphy works and seal carvings by seven Yu Un veteran artists: Chui Tak Kei, Deng Fen, Luo Shuzhong, Situ Qi, Gan Heng, Lin Jin and U Kuan Wai.

Fang Lijun - The Light of Dust

Fang Lijun is an emblematic figure of China’s Post-1989 New Art Movement. This exhibition catalogue features images of all the artworks in Fang Lijun: The Light of Dust shown at the Macao Museum of Art, accompanied by research information on each exhibit and several articles on Fang’s oeuvre. Based on the theme ‘Human & Figures’, which examines Fang’s signature, fresh perspectives – particularly his new experiments with different media in the last ten years, the catalogue charts the artist’s portfolio spanning four decades in four main sections: ‘Passage: The Process of Growing Up’, ‘Introspection: Self-Portraits’, ‘Mutual Reflections: Friends’, and ‘The Light of Dust: Human’. The exhibition displays 190 artworks.
